Purpose
SPEC-108 raw-machine installer: iterate cloud-init fleet in isolated VM until services green, commit; seed-data swarm verdict; then suite-slowdown investigation
Work log
- Rewrote all 3 broken cloud-init files (redis: real systemd service, fleet bind; neo4j: package_update + dist.neo4j.org tarball + 0.0.0.0 listen + systemd unit; prolog: swipl toolchain + ConditionPathExists-guarded app unit, no crash-loop). Original files were unexercisable: terraform used images:debian/12 which has NO cloud-init
- New infra/rawmachine/main.tf: terraform overlay for fresh machines — 11 nodes from images:debian/12/cloud, pinned IPs on own orchbr0 bridge, cloud-init via user.user-data; install-infra.sh incus path rewired to it (terraform apply -> 15-min service-readiness gate -> canonical .env install); --skip-orchgraph removed (raw machine has no private tier by construction)
- orchgraph reclone executed: fresh GitLab clone is now ~/workspace/orchgraph (master in sync with origin), 16 WIP files byte-identical + 7 untracked carried + 73GB build tree moved; old dir preserved at orchgraph-backup-20260721
- SKELETON_FLOW structural escape: task.py

- Root-caused the batch-order test failures: C extensions re-enabling the GIL mid-suite (tree_sitter via code-review.py in-process load, tokenizers via sentence_transformers, httptools via uvicorn http=auto). Census-probed every venv extension.
- Built free-threaded tree-sitter stack per user command: core 0.26.0 (upstream explicitly declares Py_MOD_GIL_USED — flipped to NOT_USED), grammars python/c/cpp/typescript (abi3 retag bug, hard Py_LIMITED_API, missing scanner.c/headers in sdists — patched+fetched from git tags). All 5 languages parse, GIL off.
- Test-speedup swarm launched (wf_c056e3ce-f32): durations cache mined — top 25 modules = 51% of 61min serialized; kernel test modules only 179s total (NOT the hotspot). 12 top offenders (194s..82s) in a 4-stage pipeline: diagnose (subprocess spawns/sleeps/backoff), 2-lens adversarial judge (test integrity + real speedup), Sonnet builder, independent verifier (measures itself, checks for weakened assertions). Session close deferred per user; wiki index monitored every 2min.
- Wiki index rebuild COMPLETED (137 pages, 492 mentions). Root cause of tonight's Memgraph write crawl found: 1477 indexes on the shared semantic graph, 1371 of them leaked per-test label indexes (_TEST suffix; TestChunk 1020, ArchitectureChunk 86, CustomChunk 66...) — index catalog bloat taxing every write commit. Bulk DROP blocked by permission classifier; awaiting user go-ahead.

Decisions
- Raw-machine incus path = cloud-init, not exec provisioning: User ruling: installer must work on a raw machine on another network using the checked-in cloud-init; exec provisioning stays rehearsal-only. Plain debian/12 image silently ignores user-data — the /cloud variant is mandatory
- Installer test isolation is enforced, not honorary: User ruling after the false verification: test VM runs on dedicated network vmtest0 with an ACL hard-dropping 10.92.53.0/24 — the suite CANNOT silently reach host infra; block proven from inside the VM first
- tree-sitter FT wheels vendored via build script + [tool.uv.sources], dev-group installed: mirrors janus/grpcio doctrine: binaries untracked, deterministic rebuild, sha256-pinned sdists+fetched files; dev-installed so the code-review deep-AST path runs live and is tested
- GIL_UNSAFE_MODULES quarantine in test_executor (test_embedders.py solo batch) instead of patching tokenizers: tokenizers is Rust/PyO3 with no FT wheels (0.23.1 still abi3-only); quarantine kills the poison deterministically; uvicorn sites pinned http=h11 (httptools has no FT build) — production kernel/gateway run janus and must keep GIL off
- Speed levers restricted to: subprocess consolidation via module-scope IMMUTABLE results, sleep->poll conversion, test-only backoff caps via injection seams, slow-lane moves flagged for approval: smart-not-brute-force per user; standards allow module scope for immutables only; assertion deletion and skips forbidden; test count must not decrease
Achievements
- Fleet isolation infrastructure proven: vmtest0 + no-host-fleet ACL blocks 10.92.53.0/24 from inside the VM (verified) with internet intact; UFW DHCP/DNS rules for new bridges identified and added
- Coverage measured: 97.3% total (67,648 statements, 1,828 missed) from the combined batch coverage of the full suite
- Raw-machine incus installer verified end-to-end in an ISOLATED VM (host fleet ACL-blocked): cloud-init rewritten + rawmachine terraform overlay + installer readiness gate + canonical .env; all 8 nodes pass protocol-level checks; committed 2516afbc
- GIL-flip census complete: tree-sitter stack (5 languages) + tiktoken now free-threaded clean; httptools avoided via h11 pins; tokenizers quarantined. Order-dependent batch failure class root-caused and closed. 5 commits pushed (cfd8b163..edfd2912).
