Purpose

Context-injection correctness and the contention guard: make an overrun report itself, and stop the guard denying the observation it demands

Objectives

Work log

  1. Made a module-context overrun report itself instead of vanishing into an empty string
    • _run_module_context re-raises subprocess.TimeoutExpired; before, a timeout and 'this module has no context' both returned '' so a 48.16s render on claude/hooks/test_run_context.py injected nothing and left no trace
    • EDIT_TIMEOUT=10 for the edit route (cold render measured 8.71s, warm 0.08s) vs MODULE_TIMEOUT=30 for the Agent route, which runs once per dispatch
    • On overrun the edit path emits an UNAVAILABLE block, starts a detached warm render (start_new_session=True), and does NOT record the ledger key so the next edit renders again and collects the warm cache
    • _warm_module_context deliberately has no try/except: a failed spawn is a real condition and main()'s boundary already keeps a hook from breaking the tool call
  2. Collapsed three inlined copies of the PreToolUse response envelope into one _emit writer
    • Claude Code reads nothing if hookEventName is absent or misspelled, and it fails silently with the hook still exiting 0 — three copies is three chances to drift
  3. Fixed two more contention-guard false positives — the guard was denying the observation discipline it exists to enforce
    • Shell keywords are not commands: _is_observation took words[0], so 'until ! pgrep ...; do sleep 5; done' failed on 'until' and its body on 'do'. Every wait-loop was denied, and a wait-loop is exactly how the platform conventions say to wait for a run instead of waiting blind
    • A quoted pipe split a segment: re.split cut inside quotes, so a pgrep pattern containing '|' became a second segment whose first word was not a tool — observing a run was denied because the pattern NAMING it had a pipe
    • Fix mirrors the existing VAR=value skip: _segments() splits only outside quotes, _SHELL_KEYWORDS stepped over before the command word is read — which is then STILL checked, so heavy work behind 'time' or inside a loop body stays denied
    • Verified 12/12 across an allow corpus AND a deny corpus; the deny half is load-bearing because a skip that stopped checking would make 'time <anything>' a universal bypass
