scripts.fix_ci_permissions
Reference › scripts › fix_ci_permissions
Grants Claude the specific permissions the self-hosted CI work needs, by adding a fixed list of allow rules to the project's Claude settings file. tests/scripts/test_fix_ci_permissions.py imports it, and a human runs it.
Invocation: main takes --undo, which removes the same rules instead of adding them. Without it, apply_rules adds each rule from the built-in list that is not already present and returns the rules changed and the total number of allow rules. The script prints the settings path, each rule added or removed, and a note that the default permission mode is not touched and that only the listed commands are granted, only in this project. It is idempotent: a second run reports that nothing changed. If the settings file cannot be parsed, _load raises MalformedSettings and main prints a FAIL line and returns 1.

"""Grant Claude the *specific* permissions the self-hosted-CI work needs.
Run once:
python3 scripts/fix_ci_permissions.py
Why this exists
---------------
Claude Code's auto-mode classifier is a pre-execution layer: it never sees the
conversation, so granting permission in chat does not reach it. Permission has
to be expressed as a settings rule. Four operation classes needed to finish
the GitLab-Runner/Incus work are currently blocked, and each was attempted
through its natural tool and refused.
Why not blanket bypass
----------------------
``~/.claude/fix_perms.py`` sets ``permissions.defaultMode = "bypassPermissions"``,
which kills every prompt in every project, permanently — and it has already
been reverted once (user-level defaultMode is back to "auto"). This script
does the narrow thing instead: named allow rules, scoped to THIS project, for
the operations actually needed. Everything else keeps prompting as it does
today, and nothing outside this repo changes.
What it grants (project-scoped, .claude/settings.local.json)
-----------------------------------------------------------
deploy/gitlab-runner/register.sh register the Incus runner — writes a
runner token into ~/.gitlab-runner/
config.toml and restarts the user service
terraform apply/import the Prometheus instance that
is deployed but absent from state
gitlab-runner the runner CLI itself
systemctl --user restart the runner service
chmod executable bits on deploy scripts
Idempotent. Undo with::
python3 scripts/fix_ci_permissions.py --undo
which removes exactly the rules this script added and touches nothing else.
